Tuesday the 15th of March I was in Big Red headed for the Grand Canyon. It’s funny I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life and have never been there. Driving in the truck I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought it was going to just be a big hole in the ground. When we got there it definitely succeeded my expectation.
The first day we were there, we went on a couple mile scenic hike. We took a bus a few miles deep on the top, and hiked back. It was really beautiful looking at all the different landscapes down to the bottom. Walking around the top gave me an idea of how vast and incomprehensible the Canyon is. I now see why it’s the Seventh Wonder of the World.
When we got back to camp for the night, I made a delicious dinner. After that we went to a meeting on all the endangered species of the Grand Canyon. The presentation was on how animals make it on the list and how it hopefully gets of the list someday. There was something like 30ish endangered species there. When an animal becomes protected, it becomes a crime to move them or pretty much touch or look at them wrong.
The next morning on Wednesday I woke up around 6:30am and no one else was awake. I decided to go on a walk by myself. During the walk I walked up on around 20 elks, it was pretty awesome. You could tell they were use to people, because I was standing only a few feet away from some of them. It was cool seeing the males, females, and babies, and how they reacted to certain situations.
I walked back to camp after that, made breakfast, and waited for everyone else to wake up. We went on the Bright Angel Trail that day, which is a three mile hike down and then three up. On the way down I ran into a kid I used to go to school with. It was weird talking to him for a minute. He was with his dad, out on spring break from college. Some of the things I don’t know about. One day I’d like to be where he is in life, and not to be in treatment again. The hike was easy down.
We got down quick and on the way up, I wanted more of a challenge. So my friend Rida and I decided to run up the last 1 ½ mile. It was cool pushing each other to do better and accomplish something we said we were going to do. That’s kind where I’m at in life. I keep saying I’m going to do something, but I never do. They say this program’s about action and I believe it. Nothing is going to change around you until you change. I keep saying I’m going to change, but now I’m taking action and have never been happier.
