Dear Back2Basics Families,

The weekend started off with a highlight! It was an awesome trip to a lava cave nestled deep in the pine forest outside of Flagstaff. The tiny opening to the ancient lava tunnel was deceiving if anything. The cave opened up to a spectacularly large chamber that stretched roughly a third of a mile. It was especially therapeutic and encouraging to see some of my peers overcome their fears and dive right into the dark, unlit cavern. This weekend was definitely different than most as we stayed in Flagstaff and slept in our own beds at night. This allowed us to cook some great meals for dinner. One favorite was bacon cheeseburgers, a refreshing difference from cooking oatmeal for breakfast over the campfire. The day ended with an in-house meeting on the topic of the Daily Reflection.

After a restful night’s sleep, Saturday kicked off with a trip to Sedona. During the 50 minute drive we saw breathtakingly beautiful, picturesque scenery. When we arrived we took a shuttle to Dry Creek Vista trailhead. The 3 mile hike was unforgettable. We hiked up to a beautiful sandstone arch. We took some sick photos. I cannot think of another place with more awe inspiring sites than Sedona. It was awesome! At the recovery meeting we attended, we heard a guest speaker tell her story about her journey through recovery.

On Sunday we got an early start and took off to the mountains. This hike was definitely challenging and fun as we were trudging through thick snow. The highlight of this hike was enjoying the scenery and tossing snowballs at each other. We made it back to the house and concluded the day with a meeting on the topic of recovery and faith. For dinner we had a nice meal of fajitas. Overall this weekend gets an A+!

With Love,
