Dear Back2Basics Families,
Our trip started out to Parsons Trailhead, Friday. Our view upon arrival was a beautiful, large canyon with a river flowing through it. We began our 3.5 mile hike towards a spring at the beginning of the river. While hiking along the river we crossed many small creeks. We passed a mineshaft and a Native American shelter that we would explore the next day. Our campsite for the night was right next to the river. The spot was surrounded by red canyon walls and sand. We set up our tents and made dinner. After dinner, one of the guys shared his story, which is part of our recovery work. The other boys related to the story sharing support and encouragement.
The next morning we woke up and prepared for the day. Preparation and treating our water for the day is essential to stay hydrated. While getting ourselves prepared for the day, we ate breakfast around the fire. Our plan for the day was to explore the river and have time to relax by the water. After hiking about a mile, we arrived at a rock overhang. We all sat around listening to guitar and fishing in the river before moving to the next spot down the river. We explored an old abandoned mineshaft which was dark and ominous. Inside the mineshaft there was a big open room with old bones littered around. After exploring the mine shaft, we hiked up an adjacent canyon wall to an old Native American shelter. Along the hike were several spiky plants to navigate around. When we got inside the shelter we decided to hold an AA meeting inside of the shelter. The meeting topic of “How the outdoors relates to our sobriety”. Following our meeting we hiked back to the campsite, started a fire, cooked dinner and listened to more guitar music before going to sleep.
Sunday morning we woke up, started another fire, cooked breakfast and began gathering all of our gear in order to hike back to the vans. Our goal was to leave around 12 so we had some time to relax by the fire. After breakfast we got the rest of our things together for the hike out. We had a great time on our hike out, crossing many streams. After our hike out, we stopped in Camp Verde for food at Filiberto’s in celebration of one of the boy’s birthdays. We set off to our next campsite which was right outside of Sedona. It was a cold and windy night which didn’t stop us from playing games and hanging out. We ended the night with an end of day review highlighting our high points and low points of the trip.
The next morning we woke up early, drove back to the house to derig and have our group to process our weekend.
With Love,
B2B Boys
