Another ski trip in recovery– something I look forward to here at Back 2 Basics Sober Living.

I used to go snowboarding about every year with my brother, dad, and dad’s friends.  His business partner owns a condo in Colorado so we had free lodging.  Ever since I was young it’s been one of my passions in life.

When I was using , I never had the drive to go snowboarding while I was high, because every time I went it was with one of my parents.  Although I can imagine that it wouldn’t be too fun.  I feel like it would slow me down.  Also, I never had enough money after I turned 18 to go because I spent all of my money on drugs.

That being said, I really enjoyed myself this weekend.  It has felt like kind of a reset button, if you will.  It reminded me of one of my few passions in life and it reminded me that life can still be good and you can have fun in sobriety.

I loved Arizona Snowbowl, especially the terrain park, even though the resort was small.  It was good for the price and especially for Arizona.  I didn’t ever know there were places to snowboard in Arizona; I pictured it as just desert.  I had a really good conversation with a random guy on the ski lift.  We talked about he and his girlfriend of 7 years just broke up, other bad things happening in his life, and the benefits of therapy and a support system.  It showed me that I can relate to ‘normal’ people if I find common ground and that my ski trip in recovery can be a benefit to others as well.
