Last night we returned from Moab river trip. It was an awesome experience and change of pace from the traditional backpacking/hiking/camping trip. The physical element of the kayaking was surprisingly difficult and made me develop an appreciation for rowing and water athletes. The feeling of having to push forward against the current and the wind was symbolic of the everyday challenges I face as an alcoholic/addict. My ability to arrive at the destination gives me empowering confidence in my ability to complete tasks and objectives.

As a trip leader, I worked on my ability to give up control to my co-leader and also take advice and instruction from staff. This is challenging for me, yet I saw a number of opportunities and examples where doing so benefited me. I also grew an appreciation for safety after an experience of being pulled under a rapid. I was stuck for a few moments and began panicking. I recognized that life jackets and wearing them properly is pivotal to being safe even in situations where it doesn’t seem necessary.
