Family Weekend at Back2Basics is a time when your family comes out to Flagstaff to see their son and the progress he has made. It is also a time to get anything off your chest that you think your parents should know about you or what you’ve done in the past when you were using. It’s a time to have complete honesty with one another so you can better your relationship. It helps the family better understand what your thought processes were and why you did the things you did. It also helps you understand where the parents were coming from when you were using and why they cared so much. The most important thing about family weekend is to spend time with your parents because they haven’t seen there son in 3-months. Sometimes even longer…. because they haven’t had their son in a long time because of drugs.
I learned a lot going through our recent Family Weekend. I learned a lot about my dad and his using. I also learned that I wasn’t as ready as I thought I was. The way I needed when I found out I wasn’t going home was childish. My mind wasn’t in the right place and if I went home I would of almost surely relapsed.Getting turned down was the best thing that could of happened to me. The person I am today at 5 months is night and day difference to what I was at 3 months.
After apologizing to my parents and realizing all of this and my part. We now have a better relationship than we ever have. Now that I’m not fighting and not swimming up stream. This made it a lot easier for me to grow up and further my recovery.
