JOB TITLE: Outdoor Field Guide

Reports To: Outdoor Director, Program Director


THE PROGRAM:

Back2Basics (B2B) is a six-month adventure recovery program for young adult males, ages 18-30, with substance abuse backgrounds looking for a positive and meaningful life. At B2B clients are exposed to a weekly combination of wilderness and addiction treatment program. Below is an example of some of the incredible natural places where we operate:

  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
  • Moab
  • Vermillion Cliffs National Monument
  • Sedona
  • Tonto National Forest
  • Tucson Coronado National Forest
  • Safford
  • Joshua Tree National Park

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Outdoor Field Guide. Full-time weekly shifts; 3 to 4 days a week in the field, and 1 day a week in addiction treatment program setting for outdoor prep. Also, 1 full week in the outdoors 1 time a month.

Compensation: Competitive wages based on experience; potential for increase after 3 months based on performance and experience; WFR recertification paid for after one year.

Dates: Full time will begin January 2019; opportunity for training and shadowing starting December 2018.

Location: Flagstaff, AZ

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The role of the Outdoor Field Guide is to serve as wilderness guides for young adult males with alcohol and substance abuse backgrounds.

Supporting B2B Client Development:

  • Work as part of a team, including outdoor and program director, licensed therapists, frontline addiction treatment program staff and field staff.
  • Facilitate formal and informal outdoor skills.
  • Facilitate Community Meeting and 12 step meetings while on expeditions.
  • Maintain a healthy group dynamic by promoting inclusivity, communication and conflict resolution.

Risk Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage group’s physical and emotional well-being and promote expedition mentality/safety in all aspects of field experiences.
  • Respond to safety concerns with appropriate and timely decisions and actions; reporting to Outdoor Director.
  • Follow B2B backcountry protocols.
  • Facilitate base camping, hiking, and backpacking.
  • Support adventure programming such as climbing, rafting, mountain biking and skiing/snowboarding

Other Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily information and documentation to other staff and supervisor regarding important group and individual developments, observations and interactions with clients.
  • Participate in planning, supervision and implementation of outdoor program elements including food and gear preparation for each expedition.
  • Complete daily notes on activities and clients with accuracy and efficiency.
  • To adhere to the outlined schedule, including staff meetings and scheduled trainings.
  • Establish social and professional boundaries with the clients.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for all clients and staff.
  • Follow all driving rules and regulations when transporting clients and or driving a B2B vehicle.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Must possess and maintain current Wilderness First Responder, CPR and First Aid
  • Experience working with young adults, preferably in leadership, mentoring or instructional capacity
  • Experience with 12-step and/or in a recovery setting; minimum 1-2 years continuous sobriety if applicable
  • Backcountry trip leading experience; good backcountry navigation skills
  • Applicants must have valid driver’s license, with insurable driving records

Other Considerations:

  • The outdoor field guide position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Guides are expected to hike on uneven terrain, while carrying a backpack and essential equipment possibly weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Qualified candidate must provide own gear.

 

JOB PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Must be able to deal with a high stress and high demand work environment.
  • Must be able to cope with varying and unpredictable situations tactfully with personnel, clients, family members, visitors, and the general public.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency and crisis situations in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintains Certifications and expectations of a clean diving record (CPR, First Aid, clean MVR, etc.).
  • Demonstrates ability to adhere to the Program’s standards of care, program rules, protocols, and handbooks.
  • Maintains knowledge of program rules, protocols, and handbooks.
  • Assesses client’s needs with awareness of diversity to determine appropriate group activities.
  • Establishes trusting, respectful, and therapeutic relationships with clients while maintaining healthy boundaries and professional standards of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates respect for client diversity (gender, age, religion, culture, sexual identity/orientation, and physical/mental disabilities).
  • Contributes to treatment plan development in client staffing.
  • Provide daily information to other staff and supervisor regarding observations and interactions with clients.
  • Document daily updates and observations of clients, including incidents that may be significant to shift supervisor.
  • Monitor and document overview of clients’ family phone calls.
  • Coach Life Skills on an individual basis as needed.
  • Facilitates Big Book or other AA meetings, when appropriate.
  • Supervise client work hours.
  • Employs appropriate crisis intervention techniques as required.
  • Assists clients with all activities of daily living, including personal hygiene needs. Teaches proper hygiene when necessary.
  • Acts as a client advocate ensuring that client rights are upheld.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, therapeutic environment at all times.
  • Recognizes and responds to priorities in client care. Takes accountability for client safety while on duty. Ensures clients are accounted for at all times. Checks clients and the environment meticulously for contraband.
  • Role models and teaches appropriate social skills to clients.
  • Facilitates a positive therapeutic environment. Ensures the integrity of the program by providing high quality interactions and activities as scheduled.
  • Maintains consistency and predictability of milieu structure.
